As Kia, the world’s fastest growing automaker, continues to rise in popularity, it has been investing in its model range by keeping things fresh. New versions of the Rio subcompact, Sedona minivan, and the all-new Magentis continue to build the brand, while revisions to the Sorento have helped to keep it up to date. The final vehicle in Kia’s lineup that hasn’t been given a thorough update is its largest, most luxurious vehicle, the Opirus (sold here as the Amanti); a revised version of which will arrive in 2007.
Affectionately known as the Cadillac of the East, the Amanti is much like classic, full-size American luxury sedans, with a cushy ride, a plush but simple interior and traditional exterior styling. Kia has kept the design of the Amanti similar to the current car, although, there are some important differences. The nose, for instance, has been tidied up with a sleeker, lower hood, smaller headlamps and a wider, narrower flush-mounted grille. Interestingly, Kia has lengthened the rear overhang of the Amanti by 20 mm (0.79 in.), and has fitted a taller trunk-lid and vertical tail lamps to improve the car’s cargo space, which now measures in at 450 L (15.9 cu-ft).

Beneath this evolution, however, lies a significant number of chassis and suspension modifications. The unibody frame, for instance, has been stiffened for improved sound insulation and crash protection, while the car’s front and rear tracks have been widened for better roadholding. A newly designed compact suspension system has been added as well, which reduces curb weight by some 34 kg (75 lbs). Revisions to the electronically controlled dampers allow the car to adapt to changes in road condition and react to spirited driving more quickly. In terms of standard equipment, the Amanti has 17-inch alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and standard torso/thorax side airbags.
Aside from excellent value for money, one of the strongest points going for Kia’s biggest car is the quality of its interior. It’s crafted of high-quality plastics and supple leather with fit and finish that’s just as good as any high-end Infiniti or Acura. Kia has maintained this level of quality, but updated some of the fittings, such as the electroluminescent instruments, dashboard and centre console which features revised HVAC, trip computer, and stereo controls. Amongst these changes, Kia has also added adjustable pedals and new seats with heat, ventilation and four-way lumbar support.
